    Founder and Advisor

    James believes life is about people and the impact you make on them. As the founder of Opal, James serves as a financial advisor to clients and Chief Investment Officer (CIO) for the company. He is passionate about focus and simplicity when it comes to financial plans and investments. Prior to starting Opal Advisors, James was the Chief Investment Officer (CIO) of Sheppard Wealth Management and prior to that he was an analyst and on the investment committee at Freestone Capital Management, one of the largest independent advisors in Seattle. James began his career as the Controller of Liberty Capital, a private equity firm focusing on distressed investments in real estate and real estate related loans. James also served as a board member and audit chair of Emergent Capital, a NYSE listed life insurance company where he helped the company restructure its debt and balance sheet. James earned his BBA in Accounting from the University of Washington.

  • Justin Young

    Director of Investments and Advisor

    As a former CPA, professional investor and business owner, Justin’s background is unique among most financial advisors and gives him a holistic view of your financial situation. Justin was previously a Partner and Portfolio Manager at Freestone Capital Management and has a deep expertise in the financial markets. When managing portfolios, he always looks at risk before the reward. After leaving Freestone, he started his own brand of gyms which he successfully grew and exited. Busy tending to his business and family, Justin realized that he was neglecting his own finances and understood the importance of a financial advisor. He joined Opal to guide and alleviate the burden of managing finances so his clients can enjoy life and spend time with what is most important to them. Justin is originally from Honolulu and graduated with a BBA in Accountancy and Japanese from the University of Notre Dame. He also holds the designation of Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA). Justin lives in Seattle with his wife and two teenage boys and enjoys traveling, playing basketball and golf, and as a former gym owner – exercises regularly.

  • Sprague Kolp

    Advisor

    Sprague believes on-going goal determination to be the most important element of the financial planning process. He enjoys deep discussions with clients about closely-held dreams and goals, for themselves, their families, and their communities. He believes that all strategies flow from goals and then resources. The determination of a desired life’s journey, centered on what is deeply meaningful, is essential to achieving true success. Sprague is dedicated to serving clients in a caring manner that respects deeply held client goals and provides objective solutions. Sprague joined the Opal team in 2024. He grew up in Woodinville, WA. and attended the University of Nevada on a golf scholarship graduating with a degree in Business Management in 2003. While at Nevada, Sprague was an NCAA Division 1 Academic All-American performer before turning professional to pursue a career on the PGA Tour. In 2011, Sprague brought his passions for life, people, finance, and yes, golf to Renaissance Wealth Counsel to begin his advisory career and in 2015 became a CFP® and joined the Opal team in 2025. Sprague and his wife, Stephanie, live in Snoqualmie WA with their two children, Rayna and Johnny.

  • Christina Hua

    Director of Client Services and Advisor

    Christina goes above and beyond to make sure the needs of Opal clients are taken care. In June 2024, she left her role at Amazon after 8+ years to bring her deep experience in working backwards from the customer and applies those concepts at Opal to create the best possible experience for our clients. Christina grew up in Seattle and graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in Marketing. She brings more than 20 years of corporate experience to the Opal team, ranging from billboard Sales at Clear Channel Outdoor, recruitment marketing at T-Mobile, and driving growth through digital marketing in three different Amazon businesses. When not at her desk, she can usually be found on the tennis court or spending time with James and their two kids, Taylor and Parker.

  • Bao Ly

    Director of Operations

    Bao leverages the expertise gained from over a decade in the corporate sector to serve families and individuals for Opal. Every aspect of the firm’s financial operations benefits from his careful oversight and analytical discipline. Before Opal, Bao’s career spanned from roles at Amazon And Nordstrom, where he specialized in competitor research, report automation, complex financial analysis and risk management. Across these roles, Bao developed a meticulous eye for documentation and compliance, demonstrating a proven ability to manage operating budgets of $100M+. He is a native Washingtonian, growing up in Olympia. He currently lives on Mercer Island with his wife and two boys. In his spare time, he loves to go camping with the family and riding his road bike.
