Chris has been in the field of ophthalmology for 5 years and is a certified Medical Assistant. Chris did his Ophthalmology specialty training at Stanford University focusing on corneal diseases and dry eye syndrome. He graduated from California State University and studied nursing before moving to the Northwest in 2013 where he started working at Seattle Children’s Hospital, helping children with severe ophthalmic issues both in clinic and the NICU. Chris assisted with stem cell research for dry eyes and is now performing state of the art dry eye treatments using stem cells here at our office to help patients of all ages decrease symptoms of dry eye. He is sure to put a smile on your face when working with all of his patients.
On a personal note, Chris enjoys weight training at the gym and participating on an intramural football team in a league located in Seattle. He consistently strives to improve his knowledge in his specialty on a daily basis.

Blepharospasms
Blepharospasm is an abnormal, involuntary blinking or spasm of the eyelids.
Blepharospasm affects the eye muscles and usually begins gradually with excessive blinking and/or eye irritation. In the early stages it may only occur with specific precipitating stressors such as bright lights, fatigue, and emotional tension. It is almost always present in both eyes.
As the condition progresses, symptoms may occur frequently during the day. The spasms disappear in sleep, and some people find that after a good night’s sleep, spasms do not appear for several hours after waking. In a few cases, spasms may intensify so that the eyelids remain forcefully closed for several hours at a time.
Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) is a surgical procedure to restore the flow of tears into the nose from the lacrimal sac when the nasolacrimal duct becomes blocked or obstructed.
Ectropion is the turning out of the eyelid (usually the lower eyelid) so that the inner surface is exposed. Ectropion is usually caused by the aging process and the weakening of the connective tissue of the eyelid, which causes the lid to turn out.
Entropion is inward turning of the lower eyelid, resulting in the eyelashes directing towards the surface of the eye, causing discomfort. The skin of the eyelid and the eyelashes may rub against the cornea (front part of the eye) and the conjunctiva (the white mucous membrane that protects the surface of the eye). Rubbing of the eyelid skin and lashes against the eye can result in excess tearing, crusting of the eyelid, mucous discharge, foreign body sensation, irritation of the cornea and impaired vision from keratitis.
Enucleation refers to the surgical removal of an eye. This procedure is generally recommended only when there is no other choice. Enucleation is usually performed for several different reasons: to remove a malignant tumor that has developed within the eye; to alleviate intolerable pain in a blind eye affected by a condition such as uncontrollable glaucoma; or to reduce the risk of “sympathetic” inflammation of the remaining eye when one eye has been severely injured and blinded.
Removal of an eye is considered a drastic and traumatic measure to most people. Although many patients who require this surgery have no vision in the affected eye, those who do have vision recognize that enucleation will result in instantaneous, permanent, total blindness of that eye. Furthermore, all patients who undergo this procedure will require an artificial eye (ocular prosthesis) as a cosmetic substitute for the real eye.
Evisceration surgery refers to the removal of the inside contents of the eye (cornea, iris, lens, vitreous, and retina). The white shell of the eye (sclera) is left in place. The extraocular muscles are left attached to the eye surface and the optic nerve is not cut. Once the contents of the eye are removed, an implant is placed into the scleral shell. The sclera, Tenons, and conjunctiva are then closed over the implant and a temporary (clear plastic) conformer is put in place. The real artificial eye (prosthesis) is made in about 6-8 weeks.
Evisceration is quicker and simpler to do than enucleation. There is less anatomical disruption to the eye socket with evisceration and the end results (appearance, movement) are better. However, there are some situations where one simply cannot have an evisceration. In any eye that has a tumor (e.g., melanoma) or suspected tumor, an enucleation is the only option. If the diseased eye has end stage glaucoma, end stage diabetes, is a post trauma eye, has a known history without suspicion of a tumor, an evisceration is suitable and becoming increasingly common because of the ease of surgery and the excellent cosmetic results.
The primary goal of an orbital decompression surgery for thyroid eye disease is to create more space in the orbit to allow the eye to return to a more normal position.
The indications for orbital decompression include:
Compressive optic neuropathy
Spontaneous globe prolapse
Disfigurement
Discomfort due to orbital pressure/pain
Orbital congestion
Preoperative assessment
A full ophthalmic and orbit work-up including measurement of the extent of protrusion of the eyeball are carried out. External photographs are taken, including full face and profile views, and a view from above and below showing the amount of globe protrusion.
Ptosis is also called “drooping eyelid.” It is caused by weakness of the muscle responsible for raising the eyelid, damage to the nerves that control those muscles, or looseness of the skin of the upper eyelids.
The most common warning sign of skin cancer is a change in the appearance of the skin, such as a new growth or a sore that will not heal.
The two most common forms of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Together, these two are also referred to as nonmelanoma skin cancer. Melanoma is generally the most serious form of skin cancer because it tends to spread (metastasize) throughout the body quickly. Skin cancer is also known as skin neoplasia.
The face, however, remains the most common location for basal cell lesions. Weakening of the immune system, whether by disease or medication, can also promote the risk of developing basal cell carcinoma.
A “tumor” simply means a mass or tissue swelling. This term applies to both benign tumors (such as a mole on the skin) as well as malignant tumors (which are referred to as cancer).
“Benign” means that a tumor that does not have the ability to invade or spread to other organs. Benign tumors are not cancers.
“Malignant” refers to a tumor that has the ability to invade and spread to other organs. The term “cancer” refers to a malignant tumor.
Most eye tumors involve the conjunctiva, uvea (composed of the iris, ciliary body, and choroid), retina or optic nerve.
Eyelid surgery, commonly known to surgeons as “blepharoplasty,” is used to remove fatty deposits and excess, loose skin around the eyelids as a result of aging and environment. It can be done alone to improve vision problems or tired-looking eyes; it can also be done in conjunction with procedures such as facelift surgery, lip enhancement, or a brow lift to create a more defined, new look.
An eyebrow lift, which is also commonly referred to as a forehead lift, is used to correct several signs of aging such as droopy eyebrows, creasing of the forehead, and frown lines as well as drooping skin over the eyelids.
An eyebrow lift is often coupled with other common procedures such as facelifts and eyelid surgery for more dramatic age-defying results. Several techniques exist for eyebrow lifts; your surgeon will talk to you about your desires, examine your features, and decide which procedure will give you the most satisfying results.
The facelift, technically known as “rhytidectomy,” has become a well-known, widely used procedure designed to reverse some of the signs of aging, such as sagging skin, extra fat deposits, folds, creases, and wrinkles. To “grow old gracefully” now has new meaning!
In addition to the standard facelift, now small incision techniques and mini facelifts are available for less downtime for the patient.
Fat injections, otherwise known as “autologous fat grafting,” is an all-natural process which uses one’s own body fat from one area of the body to the area needing rejuvenation. The procedure has been performed safely and effectively for a variety of cosmetic reasons including:
Diminishing frown lines or nasolabial folds (smile lines)
Restoring volume to the cheeks
Providing definition to the jaw line and/or chin
Lip augmentation
Filling in depressions in several areas of the body such as the hands and thighs
For individuals with sagging cheeks but no jowls or banding of the neck, a mid-face lift may be the best solution. The mid-face lifts target the skin and muscle tissue in the cheeks, tightening and smoothing the appearance.
Most persons opting for a mid-face lift are addressing deep marionette lines or nasolabial folds (grooves between the nose and mouth). These can be addressed with injectable materials, but a mid-face lift is often more effective and the results last considerably longer.
Liposuction and other forms of rejuvenation are used to correct problem areas of the neck such as saggy skin, loose muscles, and excess fatty deposits. All of these problems can be stubborn, resistant to diet and exercise, making patients appear older than they really are.
Your doctor will discuss your desires for change, as well as which procedure will produce those results most effectively. Liposuction is one of the most common techniques used; lasers, endoscopic surgery, and necklift can also be used alone or in combination with other rejuvenation procedures for optimal results.
Bellafill is an injectable collagen filler used to treat acne scars and facial wrinkles, such as smile lines. It is the first long term to permanent injectable filler approved by the FDA and it represents a new chapter in non-invasive cosmetic treatments. The filler consists of 80% bovine collagen and 20% PMMA microspheres.

Sculptra is made of poly-L-lactic-acid, which is a synthetic material that has been used in medical procedures for years. It works by stimulating your own skin in new collagen production causing thickening of the skin. Skin testing is not required before use and it is FDA-approved.
XEOMIN® (incobotulinumtoxinA) for injection, for intramuscular use, is indicated for the temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe glabellar lines associated with corrugator and/or procerus muscle activity in adult patients. XEOMIN® should be administered no more frequently than every three months.
